2041

I woke up late for my class, but it is no problem because I just need to wait for the computer brushes my teeth and pick my outfit while it is taking me to the shower. After that I just have to use the teleporting machine and I will be in my seat for chem class in less than a minute. Our chemistry teacher does not live on the state, but instead of having an online class with no interaction with the teacher, like they use to back in 2011, an hologram of the teacher appears in various parts of the classroom so everyone can see clearly what he is working on. After class I wnt to the library to do my homework, the cubicles is my favorite place to study. Thirty years ago the cubicles consisted of only a chair and a table in between two walls for privacy; nowadays the cubicles are like small study rooms that instead of being seated, you can stand up and walk around, and the walls would acct like an interactive computer where you can write on and if you have a question a virtual tutor is always online to help you. After studying in the library, I went to get lunch with my friends. We rented our bikes and we went to the best restaurant that you can actually see them growing their own vegetables and farming their own animals. When it was time to go back to campus, we took the flying shutle. Having a car it's useless, why would you spent time in a small car with no company that cost you a lot, when 20 other people are going to the same place. After that I went to my comp class where the holograms of our friends, that went back to their native countries, were there. After class I went to watch a movie in 4-d in my friends dorm and then we ordered room service that arrive 5 minutes after we placed the order, I don't know what took them so long. After that I decided it was time to teletransportate back to my dorm and rest hoping that the next day I wouldn't have to wake up late.

I hate MSN!

I opened my account during middle school or junior high, and I only opened to stay in contact with my friends that I saw everyday at school. It doesn't makes sense! I saw them everyday and we had phones, but for some reason if you didn't have an msn account you were missing out a lot of things. Some friends felt the anxiety to be in MSN 24/7, they still do.
In MSN you have hundreds of people but you only talk to 5 of them regularly, still you won't delete the other people just in case you want to talk to them one day and see how they are doing. I feel that MSN is useless, if you use it to keep in touch with people from middle school then you can use facebook. With Facebook you can know what is going on with someone in another country without spending hours in a conversation when you migth have other more important things to do. Plus sometimes the MSN icon keeps going around and around and it never logs in, its like its playing with your feelings because sometimes it stops and you think you finally logged in, and then it keeps moving.
What really bothers me about msn is that a lot of unknown people add you, and because at that moment I was young, I accepted their friend request. I find very annoying when I log in and someone random "hey, what's up?, who are you?" when they were the ones who added me. It annoy me so much that I stopped using MSN for years, so if someone I knew wanted to contact me they had to contact me through facebook.
I know it is not the same to have a conversation with someone important through facebook than through MSN, because in facebook the message normally takes longer to arrive to the other person, but I cannot go back to MSN. Even if I tried, errasing random people will take me forever, and I already forgot which person I know and I don't according to their email account. How I'm I suppouse to remember if "elsyta_cute29" is my cousin or the creepy girl in my school that I never had a conversation with?
I recently opened an account on skype, and even though it is like MSN, I like it a lot because this time I only have people that I normally talk to in my account. Not a single stranger or the now exboyfriend of my cousin's bestfriend, besides I get a better picture quality for videocalls. I hate MSN but at least is good for something. The email address that I had to open to get my MSN account is now my spam account, all the notifications from facebook and other places go to that account that I never check. It migth have been useful years ago but now it has been replaced by better more efficient networking tools.

During International week a variety of events were schedule to entretain and interest the FGCU students about the cultures represented in our university. I was not informed about the times and places that the events were going to be held, but one day that I had memorize the schedule is the Latin American Day. When I was in Mexico, I always thought that I knew a lot about latin american countries, but when I came to FGCU I realized that Central and South America are so big and so different that it was impossible of truly knowing about these countries cultures, especially living in Mexico surrounded by Mexicans.
I'm part of the International club, but lately I have been so involved with Rotaract that is the only thing im focused. However, when I found out that they had planned a Latin American dance lessons I felt a responsability to make it great. The event didn't turn out as it was planned, I learned a lot.
The event was planned to start at 12.00pm but the organizers did not arrive until 12.30pm so a lot of people had left by then. The food were rice and beans. I like rice and beans but some hispanics felt offended because it is the typical stereotype of what we eat. Nevertheless something that could be rescued from the event was the music. It was not complicated, just an ipod conected to a speaker but it showed how the power of music connect us.
Althought I'm hispanic, there is a lot of things that differentiate people from South America with North America (yes, Mexico is in North America). It was amazing noticing that, althought we come from different places, all hispanics were singing and dancing to the same song. Maybe the song was simple with a couple of words but what it meant for us were the moments each of us had have with that song in our own countries. In despite I was a little upset, the music made me so happy and so homesick at the same time that I had no other chance than dance with my friends.
America has the great advantage of having people with different nationalities that should give a global vision and perspectives, making this country and its citizens unique. It is important to celebrate our international community because it is a way to give thanks to these people their contributions by bringing them a little taste of their culture. A lot of people had not been home in a long time and when they get to show off their country and see that people are interested in it, inspires them to continue in their normal lifes. The Latin American Dance party migth hadn't been a huge event, but for me and other people it meant a lot because sometimes you just need a taste of your culture to stop being homesick and be inspired to continue your life in America.

summary response

I chose to write about the article Exodus. This article is making allusion to the second book of the Hebrew and the Christian bible. The theme in that book is the migration of the Israelites out of Egypt to leave behind slavery.

The article is talking about how the migration to America its seen from the mexican side of the border. To understand the situation he went to a small village where the people, that are going to migrate, get prepared for their voyage. The immigrants understand that it is very dangerous and that it migth kill them, but as Cooper was saying "When they realize that it is only the width of a river, or a twelve-foot wall, or a three day walk that separates them from a first world economy, and a reasonable chance at a future, they push north."
This subject it is close to my heart. I remember when I was doing missionary work in a small village close to my hometown, we had to do a census and in almost every house they told us that one person went up north. Like the author was saying in the article, the life conditions for an average Mexican living in Mexico are very poor. I consider myself very lucky, but the only reason my family is economically stable is because my dad works for an American company, if that hadn't happened I wouldn't be here. The minimum wage for eigth hours of work is 52.5 mexican pesos, that would be 4 US dollars and 40 cents. The minimum wage is not enough to even only feed a family, nevertheless paying for electricity, water, and any other taxes that the goverment can come up with. I understand their reasons for leaving because I'm doing the same. Another reason that has been used more often lately is the insecurity. It brings me sadness to say that althought Mexico is a beautiful country, some parts of the country are major battlefields within the organized crime and the army. In some cities in the north of Mexico, the citizens can not have a normal life because if you go out after it gets dark, you are in trouble. Even simple things like hanging out with your friends at a party, can turn into something bad because there is reports of people breaking in and shooting everyone inside, even if the people inside has no connections with the organized crime. The situation is getting harder in Mexico, so the people that can leave they do so and the ones that can't, try. After all, as human beings, we are all looking for a better quality of life.

spring blog 2

One of the main causes of contamination and pollution is the use of cars for transportation. It is inevitable to stay in one place and to reduce the use of car sometimes can be a little complicated too, because people need to get to places like work and school. The regular solution that is given is to increase the quality of the public transportation. I’m sure that if we had a good public transportation more people will use it therefore; the contamination levels for contamination will decrease. However this doesn’t apply to all the places. Sometimes we rather drive our own car than get mugged in the subway or bus. Is it really worth it loose your belongings, and be completely traumatized from that experience just to reduce the carbon dioxide that we are emitting? I don’t think so. Then what would be the solution? Is there really a way to reduce the CO2 emissions from transportation that is truly safe?

I’m really interested about this issue, because this is the case of my hometown. The amount of cars and motorcycles in the city is too much for the number of people living there. One of the problems is that the bus drivers do not really know how to drive, so they get in a lot of accidents. Even if that problem is fixed, most of the citizens will still not use public transportation; because it is not safe, it have never been and, because of the way things in Mexico are going, I’m afraid it will never be. I’ve been thinking maybe there is another way around it. Convince people that is safe? Put a cop in every bus? Electric cars? Start a campaign so people share rides? Have side walk for bikes?

In places like Europe it is useless to have a car because it is faster and cheaper to get to places using the public transportation, plus it is safe. To find a solution to this I need to do research in places that had the same problem and found a feasible solution to this problem.

Spring 2011 first assignment

In the first chapter of our book "Perspective on Argument" we talk about arguments and the different types they have. An argument is having an opinion and having information and facts that support your idea. An argument is making a claim, and supporting it with evidence.
The type of argument I was taugth my entire life was the typical one sided argument. Either you are rigth or not. I t was really refreshing to see what des a good argument really consist. To make a good argument you need, first of all, take a position in an argument, and that the audience hasn't already decided which part to take. Like when talking about recicling and taking care of the earth. We all know that we are running out of resources and should take car of earth, either we do something about it or not.
You also have to make sure that you are not arguing about too risky subjects. For most people it is hard to argue about some issue if they are too emotional or too scary, like religion. For example, in my case is immigration. I don't know how to feel about this topic because it covers a lot situations, and I understand both of the sides of the situation. If you also choose a trivial topic then the audience is not going to be engage.
Another thing that affects your topic is if there is no common ground, because then you are going to have a hard time trying to convince the people that already made up their minds about something. I found this very useful because now I have a check list when I do my arguments.
